Description

Edit

Paços is a small rural locality in the municipality of Valença, in the Viana do Castelo district. Its name derives from paço, the Portuguese word for a manor house, palace, or bishop’s residence. Settlements with this name developed in proximity to a significant secular or ecclesiastical residence that defined the local power structure in the medieval or early modern period.

While the original manor or palace that gave the village its name may no longer survive in recognisable form, the toponym preserves the memory of a landowning presence that shaped the settlement’s development. The surrounding terrain has the agricultural character typical of the upper Minho: granite walls, smallholdings, and vine pergolas.

Paços lies on the Camino Português on the approach to Valença, near the end of the Portuguese section of the route.
