Description

Edit

Ostabat-Asme is a commune in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department, situated in the Basque country at the historic convergence of three of the four principal French routes to Santiago de Compostela. Since the medieval period, pilgrims from Le Puy, Tours, and Limoges have converged here before continuing toward Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and the Pyrenees crossing.

The village itself is modest, with a medieval pilgrim hospital site now marked by ruins, and the traditional Basque character of the surrounding hamlet. For pilgrims, Ostabat is the point at which the diverse origins of the French pilgrimage tradition unite for the final mountain crossing into Spain.
