Onton

Ontón is a small locality in the municipality of Castro Urdiales, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, situated just west of the border with the Basque Country. The locality occupies the coastal terrain immediately inside Cantabria, where the route from the Bizkaia clifftop descends into a more sheltered valley before approaching Castro Urdiales.

The surrounding landscape transitions from the exposed Basque clifftop to the more enclosed green valleys that characterise the Cantabrian coast interior. The change in administrative region is marked here by a subtle but perceptible shift in landscape character.

Ontón is effectively the gateway hamlet for pilgrims entering Cantabria on the Camino del Norte from the east.
