Description
Mosteiro de São Romão do Neiva is a civil parish in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, in the Viana do Castelo district, situated in the Neiva river valley. The parish takes its name from a medieval Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Romanus, whose church and dependencies occupied this river valley site from at least the twelfth century.
The monastery church retains Romanesque architectural elements, making it one of several early medieval ecclesiastical foundations that marked the Neiva valley as an important corridor of religious settlement. The surrounding parish has a traditional granite character typical of the Minho coastal hinterland, with smallholder farming and vine cultivation.
For pilgrims on the coastal Camino Português, the monastery site is a point of historical and architectural interest on the approach to Viana do Castelo.
