Montan

Montán is a small locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances on the route between Samos and Sarria. The hamlet has a quiet agricultural character in the Lugo river valley interior, with stone farmhouses and the surrounding oak and chestnut woodland characteristic of this part of the Galician countryside.

The name may derive from monte, mountain or woodland, suggesting a forested hillside setting. The surrounding terrain is the lush enclosed landscape of the Lugo valley interior, with the river corridor providing a sheltered path.

For pilgrims, Montán is a passage point on the approach to Sarria, the valley character consistent with the enclosed green quality of the entire Samos route.
