Description
Mereces is a small parish in the municipality of Barcelos, in the Braga district. It occupies flat to gently undulating terrain in the lower Cávado river basin, where alluvial soils support intensive smallholder cultivation of maize, vegetables, and wine grapes.
The landscape is typical of the fertile Barcelos plain: small rectangular plots defined by granite posts and wire, vine pergolas running along field edges, and traditional farmhouses with tiled roofs. The flatness of the terrain gives it a more open character than the hillier inland parishes.
Mereces lies close to Barcelos on the Camino Português, placing it among the final rural waypoints before the town’s medieval bridge and market.
