Mendieta

Mendieta is a small locality in the Bizkaia interior on the Camino del Norte, on the hillside above the Gernika-Lumo basin. The settlement lies on the final descent before the route reaches the town of Gernika, in the transition between the enclosed woodland of the interior and the open agricultural basin of the Oka valley.

The approach from Mendieta toward Gernika offers views across the basin, and the descent brings the pilgrim into one of the most historically charged stages of the entire Camino del Norte. The surrounding landscape has the green rolling character of the Bizkaia interior.
