Description
Lourosa is a parish in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, in the Aveiro district. Its principal monument, the Igreja de Sao Pedro de Lourosa, is one of the oldest surviving Christian buildings in Portugal, with structural elements dating to the tenth century and probable Visigothic origins.
The church retains interior horseshoe arches on its colonnade, a form characteristic of Visigothic and early Mozarabic construction that is rare in Portuguese built heritage. This architectural survival makes Lourosa one of the most historically significant ecclesiastical stops on the Camino Portugues.
The surrounding parish has an ordinary agricultural and residential character, with the ancient church forming a striking contrast to its modest rural setting.
