Description

Edit

Llanes is a historic town and municipality in Asturias on the eastern Asturian coast, one of the most complete medieval port towns in northern Spain. The town retains significant sections of its medieval walls, several noble tower houses, and the late Gothic church of Santa María in its compact historic centre.

The harbour at Llanes is defined by the Cubos de la Memoria, a series of painted hollow concrete cubes on the wave-break walls, created by the Basque artist Ibarrola, which have become one of the most photographed elements of the modern town. The Picos de Europa are clearly visible from the harbour on clear days, creating the dramatic contrast between the Atlantic coast and the high mountain silhouette that defines the visual identity of eastern Asturias.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Llanes is a major full-service stop and one of the architecturally most rewarding towns on the Asturian section of the route.
