Description

Edit

Gondarém is a small locality in the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira, in the Viana do Castelo district, situated in the lower Minho valley between Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira. The settlement occupies the flat to gently sloped terrain close to the Minho riverbank, where smallholder farming, vine cultivation, and the river’s presence define the local character.

The name may have a pre-Roman or early medieval Galician-Portuguese origin, reflecting the deep settlement history of the lower Minho corridor. The landscape is characteristically enclosed and green, with granite walls, vine pergolas, and the river forming a continuous presence.

On the Camino Português inland route along the Minho, Gondarém is a passage point in the long riverside corridor between Caminha and the fortified town of Valença.
