Description
Fonfría is a small locality in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances on the high Galician mountain ridge. The name means cold spring or cold fountain, describing the natural water sources that characterise the boggy, wet moorland terrain at this altitude.
The village has traditional stone farmhouses in the cold, wet mountain environment, where the Atlantic moisture creates persistently damp conditions. The surrounding moorland has heather, boggy ground, and the occasional oak or rowan on the sheltered slopes.
For pilgrims, Fonfría provides basic services on the high mountain stage and the experience of the Galician mountain moorland at its most elemental before the descent toward Biduedo and the lower terrain.
