Ermita de Gerekiz

Ermita de Gerekiz is a small roadside hermitage in the hills of Bizkaia, situated on the forested ridge east of Gernika. The chapel occupies an elevated position with views across the Oka river basin toward the coast.

The hermitage is a typical example of the small devotional chapels that dot the Basque countryside, traditionally maintained by local communities as waymarkers and places of brief prayer. The forest setting and the ridge terrain give it a contemplative atmosphere distinct from the valley towns below.

On the Camino del Norte, the Ermita de Gerekiz falls on the section leaving Gernika as the route climbs back into the forested interior hills of Bizkaia heading westward.
