Description
Chafé is a civil parish in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, situated on elevated terrain above the Neiva river estuary on the southern approach to the city. The parish has a traditional Minho character, with granite stone houses, small cultivated plots, and vine pergolas on granite posts typical of this part of the Viana do Castelo district.
The elevated position gives the parish commanding views across the coastal plain toward the Atlantic and northward to Viana do Castelo itself. The surrounding landscape blends smallholder farming with patches of eucalyptus and pine woodland on the steeper slopes.
On the Camino Português coastal variant, Chafé falls on the approach to Viana do Castelo, where the route brings pilgrims over the final hillside terrain before the Lima river crossing and the city.
