Description

Edit

Castro is a small locality in western Asturias on the Camino Primitivo route between Grandas de Salime and the Acebo pass that marks the entry into Galicia. The name, meaning a fortified hilltop or Celtic castro site, is common across the Atlantic zone of Iberia and often indicates Iron Age occupation of elevated terrain.

The setting is the high mountain terrain of the Asturian-Galician border zone, where the forested ridges and open heath of the sierra give way to the enclosed green valleys of the Lugo interior. The route through Castro is part of the final Asturian section before the symbolic boundary crossing into Galicia.
