Description

Edit

Carvalhal is a parish in the municipality of Barcelos, in the Braga district. Its name derives from carvalho, the Portuguese word for oak, with the suffix -al indicating a grove or collective abundance. The toponym signals a place where oak woodland was once the dominant landscape feature.

Oak woodland, particularly Quercus robur and Quercus pyrenaica, historically covered much of the highland and inland zones of the Minho before centuries of clearance for agriculture and eucalyptus plantation. Places named Carvalhal preserve the memory of this original forest cover.

Today the settlement is an agricultural parish with the Entre-Douro-e-Minho landscape typical of the Barcelos municipality: granite walls, smallholdings, vine pergolas, and patches of surviving woodland near the approach to Barcelos.
