Cardenas

Cárdenas is a small municipality in La Rioja, situated in the valley of the Cárdenas river on the Camino Frances between Nájera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The village has a quiet agricultural character with traditional stone farmhouses in the enclosed valley terrain.

The Cárdenas valley is one of the lateral valleys of the La Rioja interior, draining south from the Sierra de la Demanda. The surrounding landscape combines vineyard plots, cereal fields, and the gentle hills of the Rioja media. The route through the valley is sheltered compared to the more exposed ridge terrain between Logroño and Nájera.

For pilgrims, Cárdenas is a passage point on the stage from Nájera toward Santo Domingo, the valley corridor providing a pleasant forested and agricultural walk.
