Description

Edit

Bustio is a small locality in the municipality of Ribadedeva, in Asturias, situated on the south bank of the Nansa river immediately after crossing the border from Cantabria. It is the first Asturian settlement encountered by pilgrims arriving from Unquera on the Camino del Norte.

The locality occupies the flat estuarine terrain of the lower Nansa, with the river mouth and the Bay of Biscay defining the northern horizon and the hills of the Cantabrian range rising to the south. The crossing from Cantabria into Asturias marks a perceptible shift in landscape character and regional culture.

The name Bustio likely derives from an archaic Asturian or Cantabrian toponym. The locality is modest and without significant infrastructure, serving as the first waypoint inside Asturias on the route toward Colombres.
