Description
As Rozas is a small locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances on the descent toward Portomarin. The name derives from roza, the Galician term for cleared or burned woodland, the practice of clearing land by burning for agriculture that was widespread in the Galician interior.
The hamlet has a compact stone farmhouse character in the enclosed valley terrain above the Miño reservoir. The surrounding landscape combines the cleared agricultural land suggested by the name with the oak and eucalyptus woodland on the steeper slopes.
For pilgrims, As Rozas is a passage point on the final descent toward Portomarin, the cleared farmland and woodland mosaic typical of the Lugo interior terrain.
