Description

Edit

Ambasmestas is a small locality in the province of León on the Camino Frances in the Valcarce valley. The name derives from the Galician ambas mestas, meaning both confluences or the meeting of the two waters, directly describing the junction of the Valcarce and Balboa rivers at this point.

The river confluence gives the village its geographic identity, the meeting of two fast-moving mountain streams being a natural waypoint in the narrow valley. The surrounding terrain is the forested gorge of the upper Valcarce, with chestnut and oak on the slopes and the Atlantic moisture becoming increasingly dominant.

For pilgrims, Ambasmestas provides basic services in the final valley stages before the ascent to O Cebreiro and the Galician border.
