Description
Acebedo is a small locality in Asturias on the Camino Primitivo route between Grado and Salas. The name derives from acebo, the Spanish word for holly, indicating that holly woodland once defined this terrain. Holly is characteristic of the humid Atlantic forests of northern Iberia, thriving in the well-watered valleys of the Asturian interior.
The surrounding landscape has the green enclosed quality of the Asturian hill country, with mixed woodland, pasture, and the stone farmhouses typical of this section of the route. The holly toponym preserves the botanical memory of the original forest cover in a landscape now dominated by eucalyptus plantation and dairy pasture.
