Description

Edit

A Fonsagrada is the administrative capital of the municipality of the same name, in the province of Lugo, Galicia, and is commonly cited as one of the highest municipality capitals in Galicia. The name translates as the holy spring or the sacred fountain, fon being a variant of fonte (spring) combined with sagrada (sacred), directly referencing a venerated water source associated with the settlement.

The town serves as the main service centre for the surrounding rural mountain area and is a significant rest stop on the Camino Primitivo. Its commercial character is modest but functional, with accommodation and food services for pilgrims.

The elevated position in the mountain interior gives A Fonsagrada a distinctive light and atmosphere different from the coastal or lower valley municipalities, and the holy spring name adds a layer of spiritual heritage to what is otherwise a practical stage town.
