Description
San Millán de la Cogolla is a municipality in La Rioja, situated in the valley of the Cárdenas river below the Sierra de la Demanda. The village is defined by two monasteries: Suso, a cave monastery dating to the sixth century, and Yuso, a later Baroque complex at the valley floor.
Both monasteries together constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Suso is where the Glosas Emilianenses were written in the margins of Latin manuscripts in the tenth and eleventh centuries, the earliest known glosses in Castilian and Basque. The poet Gonzalo de Berceo, born in nearby Berceo, composed his religious works here in the thirteenth century.
For pilgrims in the Cárdenas valley area, San Millán de la Cogolla represents one of the major cultural detours of the La Rioja stages, its twin monastery heritage and linguistic significance making it one of the most important sites on the entire Camino corridor.
