Description
Frómista is a municipality in the province of Palencia, Castilla y León, situated on the Canal de Castilla on the Camino Frances. The town is primarily known for the Church of San Martín de Tours, a Romanesque structure built at the end of the eleventh century that is considered one of the purest and most complete examples of Romanesque architecture in the Iberian Peninsula.
The church was extensively and controversially restored at the end of the nineteenth century, with carved capitals replaced by clean stone reproductions and the building returned to a theoretical original state. The result is a formally flawless exterior whose proportions and sculptural programme are canonical Romanesque. The original carved capitals are displayed in the local museum.
The Canal de Castilla passes through the town, and the towpath route continues toward Carrión de los Condes as one of the more pleasant sections of the Palencia stages.
