Description
Casal Comba is a civil parish in the municipality of Mealhada, in the Aveiro district. Its name combines casal, meaning homestead or farm cluster, with Comba, a word for a shallow valley or combe, describing a small depression in the terrain that shaped the settlement’s position. The village sits in the gently undulating terrain between the flat Mondego and Vouga corridors, at the northern end of the Coimbra district transition.
The surrounding landscape has a mixed character of cereal fields, market gardens, eucalyptus forest, and the occasional orchards. The terrain here is beginning to rise slightly from the flat plain into the rolling countryside approaching Mealhada.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Casal Comba is a passage point approaching Mealhada, the last significant town before Aveiro on the inland route.
