Arcade

Arcade is a parish in the municipality of Soutomaior, in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia. It sits on the Ulló river close to its confluence with the Vigo ría, in terrain that has made it one of Galicia’s most celebrated shellfish localities. The natural estuarine conditions here support the cultivation and wild harvesting of oysters, clams, and mussels, and Arcade’s Sunday market is a regional institution.

The village has a compact riverside character, with traditional stone buildings close to the water. The Camino Português passes through Arcade and crosses the Ulló river, making it a recognised stop with services for pilgrims.

The flat European oyster harvested here has given Arcade an identity that extends well beyond its geographic size.
