Descripción
Redecilla del Camino is a small municipality in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, and is typically the first stop in the province after crossing from La Rioja. The village marks the entry into the long Castilian stage of the Camino Frances.
The principal reason to pause at Redecilla is the Romanesque baptismal font in the church of La Virgen de la Calle, a twelfth-century stone basin of exceptional quality whose carved arcade depicts Jerusalem as an ideal city, with towers and blind arcading around the entire circumference. The font is considered one of the finest pieces of Romanesque decorative stonework on the Camino Frances.
The village itself is a farming community on the flat cereal plain, modest in scale but significant for the font and for marking the pilgrim’s official arrival in Castilla y León after the La Rioja stages.
