Descripción
Otañes is a locality in the municipality of Castro Urdiales, in Cantabria, situated on elevated terrain above the coast between the Bizkaia border and Castro Urdiales. The village is known for the church of Santa María de Otañes, a Romanesque structure that has been substantially altered over the centuries but retains early medieval fabric.
The elevated position gives Otañes commanding views over the Bay of Biscay, and the route through the village on the Camino del Norte provides pilgrims with some of the wider coastal panoramas of this section. The surrounding terrain is a mix of pasture, mixed woodland, and the enclosed green valleys of the Cantabrian coast hinterland.
