Descripción
Oia is a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, situated on the Atlantic coast between A Guarda and Baiona. The village is defined by the Monasterio de Santa María de Oia, a Cistercian monastery founded in the twelfth century that sits directly against the rocky shoreline, its walls rising from the boulders and sea spray of the Atlantic coast.
The monastery’s sea-facing facade and fortified appearance reflect its dual function over the centuries as both a religious house and a defensive coastal installation. The building is one of the most dramatically sited monastic establishments in Galicia, with the ocean pressing directly against its walls.
The coastal Camino Português passes through Oia on the scenic but demanding clifftop route between A Guarda and Baiona, a section prized for its raw coastal scenery.
