Beschreibung
Zubiri is a municipality in Navarra situated on the Arga river, the name deriving from zubi, the Basque word for bridge. The village is the standard end point of the first full stage from Roncesvalles on the Camino Frances, approximately 22 kilometres from the Pyrenean monastery.
The defining feature is the Puente de la Rabia, a medieval bridge of three arches spanning the Arga, which takes its name from the local tradition of driving sick animals around the central pier to cure them of rabies. The stone of the pier was said to contain the relics of Saint Quiteria, the patron of rabies cures. An industrial estate beyond the village, home to a magnesite plant, provides an unexpected modern contrast.
For pilgrims, Zubiri is a well-serviced overnight stop with multiple accommodation options, providing rest after the mountain crossing.
