Vega de Ribadesella

Vega de Ribadesella is a small locality in the municipality of Ribadesella, in Asturias, situated in the flat meadow terrain of the Sella river valley west of the town. Vega means flood meadow or fertile flat ground, indicating the alluvial character of the valley floor where the river deposits sediment and creates rich grazing land.

The surrounding landscape transitions from the estuary and river mouth setting of Ribadesella to the enclosed green valley terrain of the Sella watershed, where dairy pasture and mixed woodland alternate on the valley sides. The flat vega floor gives the area a distinctive open, luminous quality compared to the more enclosed upland passages.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Vega de Ribadesella is the first stage west of the Sella crossing, in the pastoral valley corridor heading toward the coast and the approach to Colunga.
